The Museum for Applied Art, one of my favourite

Information

Stubenring 5 - website

The Museum for Applied Art ( is one of my favourite but it’s sadly overlooked by most tourists.

It is a wonderful combination of the present and the past. Its mission is to make bridges between applied arts, architecture, design and contemporary art.

The building erected in 1863 as the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, has been redesigned inside by contemporary artists. The rendering is quite unique.

At night, you can admire a permanent installation of James Turrel on the facade.

It also hosts an interesting shop where you can buy various kind of design gizmos.

And when your exhausted after your visit, take a break at the Café Prückel, not far away (see our comment).
