Belgrade

Belgrade

Did you know that the most famous travel guide “Lonely Planet” declared Belgrade as one of its top ten « Best to visit » destinations in 2015? Namely, Serbia and its capital city rank seventh among places in the world to be visited.
Belgrade (white city), continuously inhabited since the 3rd century B.C., is one of the most ancient cities in Europe. During that time it has been in the middle of hundreds of wars and destroyed at least forty times. Today, Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is the vibrant cultural center surfacing from its communist past with amazing energy and creativity.
I think that the best definition of the Belgrade spirit is the following reflection of Momo Kapor, one of the most famous Serbian writers: “There are maybe only a few things in Belgrade that I have never seen elsewhere, perhaps only three: its rivers, its sky and its people. These three ancient elements form the unique spirit of Belgrade.”

  • Essentials :

  • 01

Hedonist attitude. Belgraders like to talk of the spirit of their city. Open and always ready for fun, many of them claim to be true hedonists – and many of them are – indulging in great food, wine and music.

  • 02

Coffee time. Coffee time is a ritual in Belgrade. All the cafés are permanently full of people.

  • 03

Bakery shops. You will always find freshly baked warm bread and pastry in the bakery shops everywhere you go.

  • 04

« No problem ». Belgraders will often have a tendency to say: « nema problema » (no problem). They are generally very kind people always ready to help.

  • 05

Safety. Belgrade is a safe city.

  • 06

Public transportation. Public transportation in Belgrade has significantly improved in recent years and can present an efficient way to get around the city quickly and cheap. Electronic cards (colloquially known as BusPlus) can be purchased from most news-stands.

  • 07

Taxi. Using a taxi to get around Belgrade is comparatively cheap by standards of most Western cities. Avoid taking a taxi from one of the taxi stands in the immediate vicinity of major tourist sites (e.g. The Republic Square). Always check the price with taxi driver beforehand!

Discover E- play, one of our favourite Serbian bands. They offer a multitude of modern music influences. We especially like the extremely energetic base, distorted guitars and interesting vocals while in the Echo-tone song. We appreciate the very subtle jazzy atmosphere.

Shopping :

Usce shopping center

The Usce Center is the largest shopping center in Belgrade. The shopping gallery accommodates approx. 150 shops, restaurants and leisure outlets. Major international tenants such as Zara, Mango, H&M, New Yorker, Marks & Spencer… opened their stores in the Usce center. The surroundings are very pleasant and overlook the confluence of Dunav and Sava Rivers.

Kralja Milana Street

International and local brands can be found along a kilometer and a half long stretch of stores.

Knez Mihailova Street

Belgrade’s main street, Knez Mihailova and its surrounding area, is decked out with shops where you can find well-known Serbian and global brands. This pedestrian zone is one of the best looking streets in Belgrade with many XIX century buildings and the perfect place for shopping. At the top end of Knez Mihaila St. is a line of craft stalls that sell handmade gifts and souvenirs.

Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra

Unlike other places in the city, this shopping street offers literally everything – all types of goods, quality ranges and all price levels. As a residue of the past, you will have the opportunity of doing some trading in the street in an open-air bazaar, open every day – regardless of the weather.
