It’s a place dedicated to creativity and art where you will also find pleasant places to unwind between 2 exhibitions like the courtyard featuring blue plastic benches on which you could even take a nap in the sun or interesting bars for a drink and a quick bite (our favorites: café Leopold & Corbaci – see tips). If you want something more substantial to eat: go for the Glacis Beisl (see tip), at the back of the museum quartier. Take the steps next to MUMOK, they will lead you right there.

The architecture from the buildings range from baroque to cutting edge contemporary architecture with the MuMok (the museum of Modern Art) designed by Ortner & Ortner.

Besides the 2 major museums (the MUMOK and the Leopold museum), it hosts a range of contemporary exhibition spaces like the Kunsthalle Wien and festivals like the Wiener Festwochen, an annual summer festival. Additional highlights include the Tanzquartier, an international, state-of-the-art centre for dance, the Architekturzentrum Wien, quartier21, which features a number of alternative art groups, production studios for new media, artist studios for artists-in-residence, outstanding art and cultural facilities designed for children, and a variety of other events and festivals such as the renowned Viennale film festival, the ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival, Techno Sensual, and many others. So have a look at the programme before you go as there might be some interesting stuff to keep your evening busy (like Café Léopold where there are often musical events and DJ’s after dark.)

The Museum Leopold is a must see that mainly focuses on an artist who played a major role in Austria modern art History: Egon Schiele. It also features some beautiful works from Gustav Klimt as well as a small but very interesting exhibition of arts and crafts objects from the Wiener Werkstätte.
